SBA 8(a) and HUBzone Certification Orientation

The 8(a) Business Development Program is a business assistance program for small disadvantaged businesses. The 8(a) Program offers a broad scope of assistance to firms that are owned and controlled at least 51% by socially and economically disadvantaged individuals.
In order to participate in the 8(a) Business Program, a business has to go through a certification process.  Oftentimes this can be a confusing and lengthy process. The purpose of the workshop is to lessen the burden and confusion of going through the 8(a) certification process. Once certified, you are able to apply for federal contracts under the 8(a) Preferred Minority Business designation, and possibly receive sole-source contracts (up to a ceiling of $4 million for goods and services and $6.5 million for manufacturing).  The workshop will consist of an orientation session on: Thursday, March 22, 2018 from 11:30 am to 1:30 pm  there will be a one day Saturday workshop scheduled next month.

In order to participate in the orientation, a business will need to be registered or have begun the process of registering in the System For Award Management (SAM) database. We will be offering a SAM workshop prior to the 8(a) Certification Workshops.
Workshop conducted by:
Nancy N. Alvarez
Supervisor, 8(a) Business Development Program
Dallas Fort Worth District Office
U.S. Small Business Administration

Nancy N. Alvarez was selected to head the 8(a) Business Development Program for the U.S. Small Business Administration, Dallas/Fort Worth District Office on September 11, 2011.  She is instrumental in providing leadership, management and oversight to optimize the deployment of SBA's Federal Contracting programs and services within a 72 county geographical area covering North Texas.

As the SBA's Women Ownership Business Representative, she is responsible for increasing participation of women owned small businesses in Federal Contracting Programs and advocates to local Federal agencies on behalf of Women Owned Small Businesses (WOSBs).

Nancy graduated from Jacksonville University with a Bachelor degree in Business Administration (Magna Cum Laude). She is a member of Phi Beta Kappa Honor.  She served on the Board of the City of Jacksonville, Mayor's Hispanic American Advisory Board and the Mayor's Small & Emerging Business Advisory Council.  Additionally, she served as an advisory board member in the Beaver Street Enterprise Center, Jacksonville's first business incubator.

Nancy is currently a advisory board member of the Dallas/Fort Worth Federal Agency Small Business Advocacy Council (FASBAC), a small business professional's forum where federal agencies share, gather, and create ideas that promote small businesses' interest and participation in the federal marketplace.
